Feeding your baby cereal is one of the important development milestones in his life. This
step marks his increasing independence as well as the ability to reach physical milestones
which are crucial for development such as reflexes and head control.
During your baby’s first few months, the only food he needs is breast milk or formula. Milk
provides all the nutrition babies need, and it’s the only food that their mouths and digestive
systems are designed to handle. Bur between 4 and 6 months of age, babies become more
physically active. That’s when they first become hungry for, and developmentally ready for,
solid foods.
Most babies are ready to start eating solid foods between 4 and 6 months. Premature babies
may be ready a little later. Each baby’s development is different, the following signs indicates
your baby is ready to start trying solid food:
A. His head control is good and he can sit up alone or with support.
B. He shows more interest in food. He may start to watch you closely when you eat, open his
month when he sees food and learn forward and reach out forward your food.
C. He can close his mouth around the spoon and use his lips and tongue to swallow the food
rather than spitting it out.
D. His appetite is increasing and he seems hungrier than before.
For most babies, the first solid food is baby cereal. Baby cereal is nutritious and gives your
baby good practice eating from a spoon. Be sure to buy iron-fortified baby cereal, since you
baby needs the extra ion to grow. Start out with rice cereal, the oatmeal and barley cereals;
try wheat and mixed cereals later, since they can cause allergies. Give your baby only one
new food at a time for at least two to three days to watch for possible signs of allergic
reactions such as vomiting, diarrhea or a rash. If you see any of these signs, stop the food
and talk with your doctor.
Your baby is growing very fast right now, so you may want to start a “new food” every day,
but it’s best to wait two weeks to start something new. For the safety of your baby, since the
introduction of new foods too quickly can “hide” allergies that can cause serious health problems.
Never give to any child under one year of age the following: honey, cow’s milk, or ice cream
or yogurt, peanut butter, or eggs. Those are the worst causes of allergies and other health
problems in babies under on year of age.
Babies will have varying appetites so look to baby cues to indicate fullness. Signs include leaning
back in his chair, turning his head away, playing with the spoon or not opening up for another
bite after swallowing. Always give your child time to swallowing as sometime he will keep his mouth
closed during this process despite still being hungry.
